The world loves pasta

I bet you love pasta as much as we do. Italian cuisine is the world’s most popular cuisine with pasta and pizza taking the top spot in a recent YouGov study of more than 25,000 people in 24 countries. It’s no surprise that Italy is the largest producer and consumer of pasta worldwide. Italians consume an average of 26 kilograms of pasta per person each year with more than 60% consuming pasta daily. This is six times the average consumption in Australia and five times the consumption of pasta in the world.

Did you know that there are over 300 different ‘formati di pasta’ (pasta shapes)? Spaghetti, penne, fusilli – ‘pasta fresca all’uovo’ (fresh egg pasta) or ‘pasta secca’ (dried pasta), ‘liscia’ (smooth) or ‘rigata’ (grooved) – the list goes on and on. It is not an easy task to choose the right pasta for a dish and can make a big difference. Don’t be alarmed! Italian Spoon have recommended the most suitable pasta shape for every dish which is important with over 300 to choose from. There are 4 pasta shapes that most Italians have in their pantry at any given time. Can you guess which ones they are? Spaghetti, penne, fusilli and rigatoni.

What is World Pasta Day about?

The theme of World Pasta Day 2019 is the future of pasta, specifically what will pasta look like in 30 years’ time. Chefs and pasta lovers will be involved in the “Al Dente” festival to demonstrate creativity and Italian passion for pasta with one dish inspired by this edition’s theme, #pasta2050. The invitation is extended to bloggers and pasta lovers who will join a “virtual spaghetti dinner” on the 25 October 2019 by using the hashtags #pasta2050 and #WorldPastaDay. Everybody is invited to share photos and videos about their pasta concept on the 25 October 2019 via Facebook events and Instagram moments to celebrate the present and future of pasta.

Here are the 6 trends to understand how pasta will be in 2050:

#1 I EAT TRADITIONAL- Pasta with tomato, the flagship of the Mediterranean diet in the world
#2 I EAT ETHICAL- pasta, vegetables and sustainability
#3 I EAT GLOBAL- pasta fusion: a world of contaminations
#4 I EAT DIFFERENT- pasta with ingredients still to be discovered
